It won’t be here in time for the current hot weather we are having in the UK but news reaches us that Volkswagen have two new concept cars for the Golf – namely the VW Golf R and Golf GTI convertible options. In what would be the companies fasted ever production drop top versions the buying public should expect to receive a vehicle that is identical in specification to its hard top partners in crime. This will mean for the Golf R Cabrio a 266 bhp engine from a 2.0 litre power plant with all wheel drive and a seven speed DSG gearbox or six gear manual. The 0-62 mph time is impressive at only 5.9 seconds which is again identical to the hard top -no mean feat with the additional engineering required with any convertible car. As with any concept car showcased at a motor show Volkswagen will utilise the public and media feedback before making the decision to put the models into full production but with recent successful models such as the A3 convertible and 1 Series coupe drop top there certainly is a buoyant marketplace. The GTI version on show was based on the current Golf Cabrio model which already comes available with the same 2.0 litre turbo charged 207 bhp engine so the likely hood of it entering a full production run is very slim. The Vw Golf GTI on show had a number of additions that are thought one day will enter the public domain in the form of optional extras such as alloy wheels, body kit with rear apron and twin chromed exhaust set up.
